Waterloopleinin alueella aloitti Amsterdamin merkittävin juutalainen kauppa-alue, vuonna 1893. Toiminta loppui vuonna 1941. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen Waterloopleinin kauppa-alue syntyi uudelleen, ensin tavallisena tori-alueena ja 1960-luvulta alkaen myös kirpputori alueena ja nuorison kohtaamispaikkana.
Nykyään Waterloopleinistä voi löytää oikeastaan miltei mitä vain. Sieltä voit löytää esim. käytettyjä vaatteita, antiikkia, lp-levyjä, kirjoja, t-paitoja, vanhoja sotilas uniformuja, Che Guevara julisteita, halpoja grafittimaaleja, etnisiä puoteja ja voit hankkia täältä jopa tatuoinnin.

Waterloopleinissä kiertelyn jälkeen, Sommersbyn siideri terassilla maistui herkulliselta.
Aarteita Waterloopleinissä kiertelystä ei jäänyt kuin kameraan, kuviksi.
Paikka toi mieleen Berliinin Mauerparkin missä pari vuotta taaksepäin oltiin mimmien kanssa.
Ihan kierrettävä kirpputorialue, suosittelen.

Sattumalta bongasin Amsterdamin kadulla värikkäitä örkkejä ja olihan se ihan pakko mennä katsomaan mistä on kyse. Kyseessä oli Bortusk Leerin näyttely "fuck off winter". Hänen töidensä tarkoitus on piristää taiteen katsojan päivää ja saada hymy kasvoille. Leer yrittää etäännyttää ihmistä elämän vakavuudesta.

"His street works sole purpose is to brighten up the viewers’ day and put a smile on their face, brief encounters that distract us from the seriousness of life. Residing in Amsterdam but originally from the UK, his brightly coloured, painted monsters occupy walls, windows, doors and electricity boxes wherever he can find them and wait patiently to surprise the next unsuspecting member of the public. The idea behind ‘Fuck off winter’ is best summed up in his own words…

“If you‘re sick of the cold, the extra darkness, idiots being in charge of the world even life in general. Well this show is guaranteed to make you feel better about shit or you’re already dead!”"

Man behind the myth

"Apparently born under a super full moon sometime in the last century in a country too difficult to pronounce, let alone spell. Not much is known of his early years, other than they are shrouded in the deepest of secrets. Some say he was raised in a traveling circus, others that he is an aristocrat of Slovenian heritage, that was never seen in public without sporting a top hat and silver tipped walking cane. Rumour has it that he is now 98 years old and used to associate with the greatest minds of his age. Then again others think he's just some bloke from England who likes to paint ridiculous amounts of bright coloured art.

What we do know though is that since bursting onto the art scene in 2007 this happy, childish, neon, silly work has been appearing and popping up on streets and gallery walls in numerous places around the world. With the sole purpose of trying to brighten up the viewers day and cheer them up a bit. Bortusk calls his style art comedy, but sometimes he's the only one laughing if we're being honest."
